A letter to the editor of the Miscellanies of Thomas Chatterton, 1779.

Manuscript, in the hand of Thomas Kirgate with corrections in Walpole's hand, of a draft of Walpole's defense of his conduct towards Chatterton against the accusations of John Broughton, the editor of Chatterton's Miscellanies. Quoting and refuting passages from Broughton, Walpole explains why he has reluctantly taken on the task of defending himself; provides his own interpretation of Chatterson's application for patronage; emphasizes the import of Chatterton's forgeries; and denies both that his refusal to sponsor Chatterton was the catalyst for Chatterton's suicide and that his suicide deprived the world of works of genius.
